  • jean gray, what an unexpected character, even antagonist
    • very neat parallel to Peter’s conflict
    • mind-hopping is such a visually fun/cool concept. clear limits
    • but also like. why is she kinda sociopathic, on the rooftop playing on Peter’s trauma with MJ. she offs everyone else in her way of her goal. I guess she needs to psychologically break Peter, since she can’t jump into him. but it’s also almost like she’s having too much fun, yk
    • yeah and her character is only properly explored after the reveal at the 75% mark. i do wish we got more hints earlier on about what she wants, and how we can expect her to challenge Peter philosophically. perhaps
    • yeah we spend too long on her as a doing hard villainous deeds with no redeeming qualities. compare with Zuko, who has honourable moments even in Season 1.
  • imo climax was solid and earned, Peter embracing his grief, Aunt May being a mother figure for Jean. The leads finding friends in each other.
    • set up nicely from the Inciting Incident when Jean couldn’t enter Peter’s mind — Chekov’s Gun says we can expect that later
  • actually a lot of characters, that offer meaningful + compelling dynamics/chemistry
    • DeWolff (the detective), she’s fun and challenges Peter’s beliefs
    • Frank Castle/Punisher, anti-hero clashing ideals, his subtle backstory
  • Banner/Hulk in this narrative
    • cool thematically, he wrestles with the pain and responsibility of his powers, too
    • Smart Hulk gone, OG Hulk is back babee
    • when Hulk has Peter pinned, Peter appeals to Bruce Banner, not Hulk.
    • I think it would have been peak, if Hulk gets extra triggered that he’s being inhibited and Banner championed (just like how Peter is trying to inhibit his “beast” side). Then finally, Peter is forced to appeal to the Hulk persona, which Hulk finally respects and surrenders
  • Metzger’s (Director @ Damage Control) villain reveal was not too critical, because he’s only a minor antagonist.
    • V-Max was everyone’s Red Herring, but Jean was hard pursuing this thread. He genuinely doesn’t know what V-Max is. What if there was a plot device (truth serum? mind reading?), that confirmed to Peter — he REALLY doesn’t know what V-Max is.
    • This way, the audience has a good reason (other than his word) to feel safe around Metzger.
  • cinematography is S-tier. action set pieces are S-tier. barely marvel comedy nor unnecessary cameos. a very welcome step-up from what we generally got in Phase 4
  • i’ll probably need to digest abit more to properly formalise the movie’s thematic message
